Roxhill Park - Live Staking Lab at ...02/08/2014
Do you have a curiosity to learn and/or desire to practice the fine art of one of the simplest, most amazing plant propagation methods? Green Seattle Partnership Forest Stewards, Washington Native Plant Society members, and UW Restoration Ecology Network students are invited to a live staking training with a ‘propagationist’ who has honed the skill with great success. Lawton Park's Forest Steward Barbara Downward is a strong advocate and field practitioner of live staking. She will give demonstrations, instruction and one-on-one guidance at Roxhill Bog, one of Seattle's natural areas with a diversity of native plants that live stake well.
After you learn the technique you can practice taking cuttings in Roxhill's natural area and take the cuttings with you to stake in your own GSP restoration site. Available plants include several willows (Salix sp.), red osier dogwood (Cornus sericea), quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), black cottonwood (Populus balsamifera ssp trichocarpa), Pacific ninebark (Physocarpus capitatus), black twinberry (Lonicera involucrata), snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus), salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis), high bush cranberry (Vibernum edule), oceanspray (Holodiscus discolor), thimbleberry (Rubus parviflorus), red elderberry (Sambucus racemosa), and three roses (Rosa sp.). This will also assist Roxhill’s Forest Steward Scott Blackstock in pruning back overgrowth to widen trails and bring in sunlight for planted trees and ground cover plants.
Roxhill's regular work party begins that day at 9:00, so if you have time & inclination, feel free to come early to help out while getting acquainted with the park.
